International Year One

A First Year Degree Program For international Students

The International Year One is for international students who want to study an undergraduate degree in the UK, but do not have the qualifications required for direct entry to a British university. It is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree, but with more flexible admission requirements for international students. On successful completion, most courses guarantee progression to the second year of a bachelor's degree (year 3 in Scotland1).

Entry Requirements

If you do not meet these entry requirements, you should consider a University Foundation Course instead.

Type Minimum Requirements
UK / International AS Levels (C/D grades), A Levels (D/E grades), International Baccalaureate (20 - 30 points), US High School Diploma / AP or a recognised international foundation year.
By Country Students who have completed 12-13 years of high school education in some countries2 can be accepted onto an International Year One programme at many UK universities. In other cases (and for most higher ranking universities), an further year of study after high school is required.
English Language IELTS 5.0 (5.0+ in all skills).

Note: You do not need an International Year One if you already have the qualifications for direct entry to a bachelor's degree. If you are not sure, see our guide to UK university entry requirements or ask your student advisor for advice.
