About This Course

Most Medical Schools in the UK require successful completion of A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB), with top grades in Biology, Chemistry and either Maths or Physics. Overseas students also have to demonstrate an English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7.0 (7.0 in each skill).

This foundation year provides an alternative pathway to a Bachelor's of Medicine & Surgery (BMBS) for international students who have not studied A Levels or IB. It is accepted for admission to a medical degree at at The University of Central Lancashire, subject to grades and other conditions.

There are two pathway options, depending on your academic qualifications.

  • Medicine Pathway
This pathway offers direct progression to the standard 5 year MBBS programme, which trains students to become qualified doctors.
  • Life Sciences Pathway
This pathway is for students who want to become a doctor, but do not have the qualifications for admission to the Medicine pathway. It offers progression to an extended version of the MBBS programme (6 years), which includes an additional year of study that teaches fundamental biomedical sciences, mathematics and scientific communication skills.

Important: Progression to a medical degree is not guaranteed. Successful progression is subject to a competitive entrance interview. It is also very important to demonstrate your interest and commitment through work experience and voluntary work in the health sector. Students who are unable to progress to medicine may be offered an alternative, for example Biomedical Science. Please note this international programme does not accept UK students.
