About Universities in the United Kingdom

There are approximately 120 universities in the UK, the majority of which are publicly funded. Some universities excel in research and have a clear academic focus, particularly older "Red Brick" universities such as Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield. Modern universities usually focus on career oriented or vocational courses.

International Programs

International programs are for overseas students who want to study a degree at a UK university, but do not have the academic or English qualifications for direct entry. Use the guide below to find out if an international program is right for you.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements

Most high school qualifications from outside the EU are not accepted for direct entry to a bachelor's degree, due to differences in study length and curriculum. For most international students, the fastest route to a UK university is a one year University Foundation Course. In most cases, these courses offer guaranteed progression to your choice of degree.

Level Entry Requirements
University Foundation Course Successful completion of High School in your own country or IGCSE (4 - 5 passes at grades A - C).
English level: IELTS 4.0 - 4.5 overall with 4.0+ in all skills.
Minimum age: 17 years.
Bachelor's Degree Direct Entry A Levels (minimum C/D grades in three subjects) or International equivalent1.
An English level of IELTS 6.0 - 6.5 (5.5+ in all skills).
Minimum age: 17 years.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements

For direct entry to a master's degree, you will need a bachelor's degree (Second Class) and an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.5. If you don't meet these requirements, then a Pre-Master's Course may be the best option for you. These international programs have lower entry requirements and offer guaranteed progression to a master's degree in 3 - 9 months.

Level Entry Requirements
Pre-Master's Course Bachelor's Degree (Third Class or GPA 1.75 on the 4.0 scale) or
A Higher national Diploma (Credit+).
