Foundation Years For International Students
The University of Leeds usually requires A Levels (or equivalent) for direct entry to a bachelor's degree.
Some overseas qualifications1 are accepted, but most international students have to study a foundation
year before progressing to the first year of a degree at Leeds.
There are two foundation options, depending on the subject you want to study, your academic qualifications and
your English level.
-
The Integrated Foundation Year is taught on campus at the
university and offers progression to selected degrees across a wide range of subjects. You will need excellent high school
grades (A/B or 85% average in relevant subjects) and an English level of IELTS 5.5 - 6.0 overall (5.0 all skills). Students must
also provide a personal statement (and a portfolio for Art & Design subjects). The course starts in September and you can apply
on the University of Leeds website, or using the
Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
- The International Foundation Year offers guaranteed progression to a similar choice of degree subjects, but with
lower entry requirements and start dates both in September and January.
This course is taught at the Leeds International Study Centre, which is located at the Headingly Cricket Stadium.
You can find out more and apply online on our website using the following links:
Business, Law & Social Studies,
Science, Engineering & Computing.
IGCSE, AS Level & International Baccalaureate Students
The Integrated Foundation Year does not accept IGCSE qualifications. If your highest qualification is IGCSE, then you should
apply for the International Foundation Year at the
Leeds International Study Centre.
If you have studied AS Levels or International Baccalaureate, then you have two options.
- The Integrated Foundation Year accepts AS Levels (Minimum 2 B grades in relevant subjects, excluding native language) or
IB (grade 3 SL and grade 4 HL) and offers progression to the first year of a bachelor's degree.
- The International Year One has similar entry requirements, but offers guaranteed progression to the Second Year, so you
will complete your studies in three years instead of four. This course is taught at the Leeds International Study Centre
and you can apply online here:
Biological Sciences (Sep, Jan),
Business (Sep only),
International Relations (Sep, Jan).
