This is a pre masters course that prepares international students for entry to a master's degree in subjects such as Business, Management, Marketing and Finance at Birkbeck College, University of London. On successful completion, you are guaranteed entry to one of the degree courses listed below (see Progression).
The Master's Foundation is a comprehensive programme of academic study and English language preparation, which includes 25 hours of classroom lessons per week. Classes are taught on campus at the University of London (Birkbeck).
Depending on your chosen degree subject and study needs, you will take a combination of the following modules:
- Academic English & Study Skills (including IELTS preparation).
- Business Enterprise & Entrepreneurship
- Introduction to Economics
- Mathematics and Computing
- Marketing and Branding
- Management
- Information & Communications Technology (ICT).
- Research Methods, Data Analysis and Project Planning.
- Research Project
- Personal Development Planning & Leadership.
The Master's Foundation starts in September, January, April or June and lasts 1, 2 or 3 terms (one year = 3 terms). On successful completion (minimum IELTS score of 7.0 and minimum D grades in academic modules), you are guaranteed entry to a business degree course at Birkbeck, starting the following September.
Please note: Most classes at Birkbeck are held during the evenings.
For Entry to the Master's Foundation
A undergraduate degree (minimum 3rd class) in a related subject from a recognised university, plus a minimum English level equivalent to:
- Three term course: IELTS 5.5, minimum 5.5 in all skills.
- Two term course: IELTS 6.0, minimum 6.0 in all skills.
- One term course: IELTS 6.5, minimum 6.5 in all skills.
Minimum age 21 years. International and EU students only (UK students not accepted).
For Direct Entry to a Master's Degree
Students with strong English skills (IELTS 7.0+) and qualifications equivalent to a British honours degree (2:1 minimum) may be eligible for direct entry, without the need to study a master's foundation first.

The Master's Foundation prepares international students for entry to master's degrees in business, law, linguistics and communication or education studies at a selection of leading colleges within the University of London, including Birkbeck and the Institute of Education.
Classes are taught at the University of London Foundation Campus at Birkbeck College using a variety of university style teaching methods, such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work and self study. At the end of the course, you will have the English, study skills and academic knowledge needed to compete and succeed in your postgraduate studies.
